Old I’s 3 – 2 Old Aloysians
Scorers: Brendan Brien, Jake Watson & OG
Man of the Match: Eoin Culligan & Tom Martin
Muppet of the Match: Brendan Brien
Second game of the season and changes have already started
to be introduced into the 1st team… After Renaldo moaning
all week about the meet time, Dave O’G set the meet for an
hour and a quarter before kick-off. Most arrived on time,
apart from Matt Morgan, who does what he wants and Tom
Martin who couldn’t buy the right train ticket…
Before we could get out on the pitch, Dave had a little
speech prepared, something about out with the old & grey
and in with the new and slightly rounder. Culligan has
stepped down from captaincy as he wants to focus on his
'fine master' duties. Mr Gracias was chosen to wear the
arm band for the remainder of the season. A quick thanks
to Eoin for all the work he has done and continues to do
for the 1’s and best of luck to our new skipper Renaldo!
Anyway, on to the game, we lined up as follows;
Joe O’ Grady
Liam O’Grady Matt O’ Sullivan Eoin Culligan
Sean Nolan Renaldo Gracias Tom Martin Eoin O'Grady
Brendan Brien Jake Watson
On the bench we had Matt Morgan & Conor O’Grady. Dan
Porter who turned up and couldn’t finish the new captain’s
intense warm up without getting injured… (Not really
intense, same as every other captain for the last 3 years –
well done though Ren).
We started the game a lot more lively than last week,
looked threatening going forward and solid at the back.
The zonal marking we have going on seems to be working as
we are yet to concede a goal from a set piece. It wasn’t
long before we got a good hold on the game and started to
get more comfortable on the ball. The football was
Barcelona esq, we kept possession really well and the ball
ended up on the right, to be crossed by Sean Nolan &
finished off by Bren with a great header. Who knew Nolan
could cross? Thought he just had sh*t banter.
We kept the pressure on and tried to focus on keeping our
shape as much as possible when attacking and defending.
Eventually we won the ball back and Jake got put through 1
on 1 (which normally means the defence would drop for the
imminent goal kick) but Jake slotted home and we could
finish the 1st half comfortably 2-0 up.
Usual team talk for us is to start the second half strong,
to not let the oppo get a good start. Standard Old I’s,
15mins in 2-2. Aloysians now full of confidence, we knew a
tough half hour lay ahead. After recovering from the mad
start, we started to get the ball moving around better and
creating some decent chances. Bren missed another sitter,
some sort of pattern forming here... We then had a free
kick awarded, Eoin O’G stepped up and put in a great ball
to the back post which was turned in by an Aloysian.
At 3-2 Aloysians seemed to get a lot more possession,
attack after attack came but we managed to keep them out.
Brendan was replaced by Conor O’G who was testing the leg
after breaking it at the end of last season. Think it may
still be a little early as Conor who would normally be
buzzing around the pitch, was only holding the ball up /
waiting for a run and trying to avoid all tackles,
understandable.. Joe O’G made a great save at the end to
finish the game and overall we defended well as team to
keep all 3 points.
Man of the match was split between Eoin Culligan & Tom
Martin, (Eoin actually had a good game for once & Tom had
another solid performance in the middle). Muppet vote went
to Brendan (missing a sitter & clearing the clubhouse with
Another challenge next week against Norsemen in the cup!
