Flapper’s Fives 2 Southgate County 2
The fives returned to Loyola this weekend following a very heavy 12-1 defeat to the then bottom of the league Vaughanians III who had scored 6 goals all season. The usual pre-match stretching routine was followed by a team talk about restoring some pride in ourselves after some poor results and performances.
The team lined up with Flapper in goal, Phil at his usual right back spot. 8.33 partnered Rob at centre back and Billy the kid at left back. Don, Clee, Arthur Daly and Billy Reid made up the midfield.
Heskey Henry partnered Young Joe who last week scored his first goal for the club. The bench was made up of Nick “I haven't won a game in 2 seasons” Platon and Abdullah.
We started off well, as in we weren't down 1 nil after 15 seconds and actually created some good chances through Heskey & Billy Reid. Actually we went 1 nil up thanks to a top corner rocket shot from “Donaldo” MacKinnon after about 15 minutes.
Rob sadly went off injured to be replaced by Abdullah, which meant Phil had to move from his favoured right back position. 8.33 decided that he was not to be outdone on the injury count, and after 25 mins declared he was injured but after some words of encouragement remained on the pitch and put himself on the line til half time.
The boys at the back, defended well, midfield battled away and the front 2 gave us an outlet…. It was like we were actually playing as a solid unit…..
Unfortunately the oppo equalised after some sloppy marking, we created some good chances and should have added a goal or two to our total however the score remained 1-1 until the 44th minute after Abdullah was judged to have handled the ball in the box.
Penalty to Southgate….. Donaldo ensured that the ball was put correctly on the spot before the forward stepped up… penalty was saved by captain flapper, and to his surprise the players ran back to get the rebound . 8.33 fell onto the ball in the box and the ref awarded an indirect free-kick in the area. The 1000+kg wall on the line must have scared the player who sent the ball into the neighbours back garden! This was met by a mighty roar followed by the ref blowing up for half time.
Platon replaced 8.33 and Donaldo went to partner Phil at centre back for the start of the second half. Unfortunately we went 2-1 down after some poor marking… but the heads didn't drop.
Southgate were denied by captain flapper with a couple of good one on one saves and also some good solid defending….with about 15 mins to go Abdullah went off injured… down to 10 men…no.... Step up the injured 8.33 who went into goal, with myself going into defence. This was followed by a customary foul and a booking (only second yellow in 20 years… yes I'm surprised too!)
We huffed and puffed and Heskey managed to get an equaliser with a looping header with about 10 mins left on the clock.
Later a flapper direct free kick going into the top corner hit the head of a defender and sent him sprawling… and lastly the move of the game saw young Joe rifle a volley that agonisingly hit the crossbar in the dying moments, which meant the points were shared, doubling our tally for the season.
A well-deserved point could have had a 3 today, but much improved performance which has been long overdue this season.
Sorry for lack of highlights and I'm sure I've missed a few, you can blame the beers afterwards for the fuzzy memory.
