1st IX 2 Fulham Compton 1
Scorers: Liam O'G; Steven English

It's right up there! What a result. Takes
a lot to keep calm when the pressure is on
but we did it and a  perfect end to the
year.  Ignatians Beer Pong Champions -
sounds good doesn't it! My winning partner
Michael Cunningham did himself a lot of
good in the 1st team selection process - I
am easily swayed! The video of the final
shot is doing the rounds in case people
want help with their technique.

Anyhow before the main event of the day
there was the small matter of a league
game against Fulham Compton to deal with.

With the best pre match music to date - we
got set to take on a bunch of big lads
from Fulham who had beaten us 4-2 earlier
in the season.

With Jake still out with a bruised toe we
also saw Tom take an early Xmas break
after his latest booking saw the league
hand out a festive ban. If only the refs
would listen to Toms advice they would be
a lot better for it!

Jordan Gray was all set for his 1st XI
debut until a reoccurrence of an ankle
injury meant he got hurt in the warm and
couldn't play so Eoin OG stepped back in
and Conor OG  went on to the bench. Jordan
an early bid for the Muppet vote!

The lads started well enough. We are not
the biggest team so knew we would have to
dig in to get anything from the game. And
dig in we did right from the start today.
The game was fairly even for most of the
half but we probably had the better
chances. Bren led the line well up top
with Ren tucking in behind him. Alex, Eoin
OG and Sean McDermott  were getting
forward as we're Dan and Callum from full
back. This left Matt Eoin Culligan and
Liam sitting in front of JP. Steve
English, Jack Barton and Conor OG were
waiting in the wings.

Our gym machine 'Cullicramps' got on the
end of a free kick from Eoin but couldnt
direct his header at goal and we had a few
other half chances as well. About 10
before half time a corner led to a massive
scramble in the oppos box where Alex and
Cullicramps both had shots cleared off the
line. The best  chance of the half then
fell to Eoin OG who was put through by
Ren. Jake on the side was heard to mutter
to himself with a worried frown 'Is Eoin
now quicker than me?' Eoin kept calm and
waited for keeper to go down. He then
chipped the ball over the keeper
.........and also over the bar ..... so we
went in at half time at 0-0. Eoin with
Muppet shout number 2!

We looked tight defensively and our
biggest crowd of the season - all ten of
them - had seen a decent first half with
JP relatively untroubled. Good to see Jake
and Tom on the side supporting the lads.
Also Sean McCaul came over once again as
his recovery progresses.

Liam had settled into the holding midfield
role and put himself about seeming to win
every header and tackle. To be fair all
the lads got stuck in today and it paid
dividends when the oppo tired, we got
stronger and started knocking the ball
about playing some good stuff.

Just after the restart, Bren came off with
a tight hamstring and Steve English came
on up top

We looked the stronger team and as the
mist descended we went ahead. Attacking
the club house, Eoin OG  struck a decent
delivery from a corner and big brother
Liam lost his man to rise high and thump a
header home. Cue wild celebrations as we
got the lead we deserved.

We kept pushing forward and Ren again
found Eoin OG. This time with just the
keeper to beat again, Eoin tried a dummy
that never quite came off, got out muscled
and as the chance was missed, strengthened
his Muppet shout.

Would the miss prove costly?

Nope. Not today. Steve working hard up top
chased down a long pass wide on the right
and when it looked like nothing was on, he
smashed the ball over the keepers head
into the far corner of the net. Some
people might suggest that Steve was trying
to cross the ball. Who cares - great goal
- we were two up.

Surely we could enjoy the last 20 mins? We
wouldn't be an Ignatian side unless we
made it interesting and true to form
that's what happened. With ten to go, Ren
was robbed deep in the Fulham half and a
long ball saw JP charge off his line. As
the ball bounced upwards, JP went under
it, and the oppo forward lobbed the ball
into and empty net. JP was doing his best
to claim the Muppet vote himself.  2-1. On
the plus side it saved me buying a jug for
a clean sheet!

It could have been a nervy last ten but we
had most of the ball.  Fulham did have one
decent chance but Matt put all those
shuttles at training into good effect when
he made up ground to put in a last ditch
challenge that saved the day.

Good to hear the final whistle and claim a
well deserved three points against a good
Fulham side.

The lads couldn't wait to get back to the
music in the changing room.

Liam deservedly got the 'Man' vote and
Eoin was Muppet -  clear winner!

Good performances all round today though
and shows what can be achieved when the
whole side battles together - great to
watch.

Always good to head into the Xmas break
with a win and with a number of players
coming back from injury after Christmas it
should help the competition for places and
strengthen the club as a whole.

Most of the lads hung around for the Xmas
social where their best efforts weren't
quite good enough to be crowned beer pong
champion! Did I mention who won?

The team spirit has been great so far this
season despite not having the best run of
results but winning the last 3 out 4 has
been  a good way to end the year.

We had a change of captain after a few
games so thanks from me and the lads to
Eoin 'Cullicramps' who passed the reins to
Ren but still continues to dish out fines
manically in between his daily gym
sessions.

So all the best for Xmas and let's hope
2017 is a good one for the club
