Old I’s 2 – 3 Park View

Scorers: Tom Martin, Dan Porter
Man of the Match: Alex Youngman
Muppet of the Match: Eoin Culligan

Following our triumphant 7-0 victory the previous week, we
were tasked with top of the league this week. The return
fixture earlier on in the season saw us narrowly defeated
3-2, so we were keen to avenge that result this time
around at Loyola.
Rory and Sean McD were absent this week, so Tommy and Dan
Porter came back in after missing the previous week. We
lined up as follows:

Joe O’G
Sean N Liam O’G Matty O Jack
Eoin O’G Renaldo Tommy Alex
Conor Jake
Dan Porter was sub.

We started the game well and took control of the ball
quite early. There was a good buzz and energy about the
team in the first 20 minutes. Some good play on the right
hand side lead to the ball bouncing up nicely for Tommy
who chanced his arm with a pop shot from about 20 yards
out. To everyone’s shock it looped in just beneath the
crossbar and resulted in us taking a deserved early lead.

In true Old I’s fashion, we conceded within 2 minutes of
the restart. Their striker was brought down twenty yards
from goal. From the resulting freekick, the ball seemed
to go through the wall straight into the back of the net –
another silly goal conceded this season.

We ploughed on but again conceded a basic goal shortly
after – a header at the backpost from a corner. We found
out in the showers after the game that the culprit was
Sean Nolan for his disappearance act at the front post,
albeit there were other individual mistakes in the build-

In a frantic 10 minutes, we conceded another sloppy goal.
The oppo got down the right hand side too easily and
delivered a cross into the box, after a scramble in the
box the ball fell to their midfielder who poked the ball
home low into the bottom right hand corner of the goal.

3-1 down at half time and all to do. The message from
Dave was that we were actually playing well but again
silly goals have cost us.   We needed to keep the belief
in our attacking play, while staying concentrated at the

Dan Porter came on for Conor OG shortly after half time,
and had an instant impact by scoring from point blank
range after the keeper had fumbled a freekick from Eoin.
The rest of the second half was more of the same, with us
on top but not really having that cutting edge in front of
goal. There were many instances where the ball fizzed
across the box but we couldn’t quite get the right
connection to direct it towards the goal.

The most noticeable chance fell to Tommy about 5 minutes
from the end. A good header low towards the bottom corner
of the goal was magnificently saved by their keeper, who
we found out after the game was 15 years old…perhaps it’s
time to retire!

Despite our valiant efforts, we are unable to find another
goal to level the score and ended up on the losing end of
a 3-2 result.

Some positives can be taken from the way we dominated a
team which sit comfortable at the top of the table.
However the wider issue we’ve had this year in conceding
sloppy goals and shooting ourselves in the foot still
persists, and we must correct this if we want to finish
the season on a high.

Man of the match went to Alex Youngman for his great
performance in the midfield – he has been a very good
addition to the team this year. Despite not being in the
match squad, muppet went to Eoin Culligan for getting into
a barney with the oppo on the sidelines, and telling
everyone in sight to ‘do one’, including his own team!
