Old I’s 1st XI 4 – 2 Old Pauline
Scorers: Tom Martin *2, Conor O’G, Alex Youngman
Man of the Match: Rory Brien
Muppet of the Match: Sean Nolan
Following a tough 3-3 draw the previous week to a strong Economicals side, we were to play Old Pauline’s at home who are in a similar position to us in the table.
The line-up was as followed:
Liam O’G Renaldo Matty O Sean McDermott
Rory Brien Eoin O’G Tommy Dan Porter
Subs: Alex, Sean Nolan, Jordan.
The day started off with the routine warm-up and Tommy was up to his usual story telling in the ‘circle of trust’ before the game. A few nutmegs occurred during the Rondo, with Conor O’G receiving 4!! We all knew Sean Nolan was there as his pass completion percentage was slowly decreasing as the warm went on and ended up being roughly around 18% before the game had started.
We started the game well and took control of the ball quite early. There was a good buzz and energy about the team in the first 20 minutes. Some good play in the middle of the park lead to a free-kick roughly 30 yards out. Conors free kick was parried out to Tommy who slotted it home from a tight angle. Unfortunately this goal was disallowed as Tommy was supposedly offside. Poor decision from the ref.
As the game proceeded, it was fairly even between the two teams until Rory knocked a cracking ball over the defence, picking out the run of Conor. The ball fell nicely for Conor to lob the keeper. Great pass, great finish. 1-0.
The 1sts tactic of zonal rather than man to man defending corners has been quite successful this season, but a corner flew in to the edge of the six yard box. Their giant 6ft 5 midfielder managed to climb on top of everyone and headed the ball into the near post. Great decision from Matty O to take Rory off the front post! 1-1.
The game proceeded and we seemed to be taking control. The ball fell to Eoin in the middle of the park who took on one player and had a shot with his left foot. Good strike, but straight at the keeper. Safe to say that Jake and Dan Porter were not too happy that Eoin shot rather than pass! A nice bit of play meant that the ball fell to Rory on the edge of the box, Rory went to pull the trigger, but completely scuffed it. The ball made its way through the defence and straight to Tommy who slotted the ball away with his left foot just inside the near post. Great pass, great finish. 2-1.
Just before half time, Eoin broke through the middle of the field, had options on either side. The ball was played through to Conor taking a massive bobble causing the ball to pop over Conors foot. What a pitch! The half time whistle blew, 2-1.
Only one change was made at half time. Dan Porter was taken off for Alex Youngman. The second half started off fairly even. No real chances were made. Eoin O’G was then taken off, which saw Jordan make his first team debut. Great player. Speaks a lot, very good on the ball and doesn’t mind a challenge. An oppo shot from the edge of the box fell into the bottom right corner of the goal. Good finish. 2-2.
Liam O’G was then replaced by Sean Nolan who slotted into the right back position. Not a great start from Sean. His pass completion was slowly decreasing even more, until a nice pass found Tommy on the edge of the box. Tom had his back to the goal, a little shimmy and then a left footed shot found its way over the goalie and in to the goal. Great turn, great shot. 3-2.
A chance then fell for Sean Nolan from a very tight angle who tried to slot the ball in, but unfortunately clipped the far post. Nice attempt, but no goal.
As the game proceeded, the oppo were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box. The shot was then blocked by Rory, which caused the ball to fall to Jordan who played the ball to Conor. An overlap from Rory caused Conor to chip the ball over the defender into Rory’s path. Rory took one touch and switched the ball over to Alex who took a Suarez esque touch with the outside of his right foot, and smashed home from just inside the box on the half volley with his left. Great team goal. Great finish. 4-2.
Before the game had ended. Sean Nolan aka Magic tried to pull off a cheeky little pass with the outside of his boot. However, instead of kicking the ball. He kicked his standing leg. Classic Nolan. This led to a comment from Jake “are you trying to lose the ball on purpose”. He is definitely in Nolan’s head! The full time whistle blew giving us a good 4-2 win.
Man of the match went to Rory Brien for his great performance in the midfield followed by three great assists. Great to have him back! Muppet went to Sean Noland for kicking his own leg instead of the ball and for a pass completion percentage of 10%. It must be said that Liam O’G ran Sean very close after sending a good few crosses straight over the goal.
