1st XI 3 Manorians 6
Scorers; Jordan Gray; Eoin OG; Conor OG
Man: Tom Muppet: Jordan
We started the season with a home game against newly-
promoted Manorians. The usual meet time was changed to 2
hrs before KO to sort out the pitch (got to love amateur
football), which then gave us plenty of time to prepare.
In team news, Liam jetted off to Ireland because they
"didnt make me do this at semi-pro", and Matt was seeing
out his ban from the end of last season.
This left the following starting XI
Jordan Ren Ena Callum
Tom Sean McD Alex
Subs : Jack
We looked to get off to a strong start after finishing
last season with a 9-0 victory, but it was clear that it
would be a much tougher game to begin the new season. From
the off, Manorians showed their physicality, using their
big striker (who even made Ena look small) as a focal
point, and with some big tackles, including a 3 footer,
over the ball assault on Sean McDermott. Looked like
they'd been taking notes from watching Mané earlier on.
It wasn't their physicality, though, that broke the
deadlock. During what appeared to be a comfortable period
of possession at the back, their number 10 nipped in and
took the ball before striking a worldy from 40 yards with
his second touch, sending it over Joe and in to the back
of the net. 1-0
We had some good periods of possession, but struggled to
create clear cut chances in a game that was scrappy at
times, but this was true of both teams. Eoin nearly sent
Tom through for a 1 on 1 but his through pass was cut out,
leading to a (harsh) muppet vote. 10 minutes after the
first, Manorians doubled their lead with a header to the
near post after a cross from the left. 2-0
Our first goal of the season put us back in the game, with
Jordan converting back-post header from a Conor OG cross.
Must've been the lucky shorts! 2-1
Their 3rd was made even worse by Ena's second yellow card
after half time, and the game began to look out of reach.
Steve dropped in to the back and Jack Barton were
introduced for some fresh legs. Within 15-20 minutes it
was 3-3 (purely coincidence Jack). 3-2 was a well struck
Eoin O'Grady freekick across the 'keeper from 20 yards. 3-
3 came from Alex's pressing, winning the ball back, before
sliding it to Callum on the left, who found Conor In the
middle, who tucked it away. Cue the celebrations, a huge
sigh of relief, and a renewed belief.
As good as it would've been, that was not how it all
ended. After a lot of battling to go ahead, Manorians
pushed us back in to our own half and had a go themselves.
After skipping through 3 or 4 players, their player struck
the ball perfectly from 25 yards, curling it away from the
keeper and picking out the inside of the post. 4-3
At 4-3 we had to push for an equaliser and committed
numbers forward, leaving us vulnerable at the back,
heightened by having 10 men. This led to 2 breakaway goals
where we were outnumbered at the back and absolutely
shattered after 85 minutes of competitive football.
6-3 is harsh given the fight we showed and the football we
managed to play with only 10. So despite the scoreline,
there were plenty of positives to take and a lot to think
about leading in to next week, when we'll pick ourselves
up and go again, and get our first points on the board.
Man of the match went to Tom for a great performance, and
loads of battling in the midfield. Jordan was muppet after
turning up dressed for Tenerife, rather than Turkey
street. Steve English ran him close for calling Joe a
"f***ing idiot" for no apparent reason.
Finally, best of luck to Callum and Eoin O'G who are
heading off to uni next week. You'll be missed boys!
