The Old I's crossed the Dartford bridge for an LOB Cup
game against Old Tonbridgians from the Arthurian league
and the lads were buzzing with confidence following our
strongest performance of the season against top of the
league last week.
The site of another 4G surface sent shivers down some of
the senior and elderly players bodies, but the first 15
minutes saw almost total possession and three excellent
goals for the Old I's. All came from excellent balls in
behind their defence who obviously struggled running back
towards their own goal and excellent play and finishes
from Conor, Steve and Tommy put us into a commanding lead.
Some sloppy marking mid way through the half saw them claw
one back, as a ball dropped to the edge of the box and
with acres of space, they drilled one into the top corner
passed a helpless Barker.
As they pushed to get back into the game in the second
half, we looked a constant threat on the break and picked
them off three more times, with Conor grabbing a second
and Jordan helping himself to two; his second finishing
off a beautifully rounded passing move which started with
Barker passing out to Pete O'G, via Liam and Tom in the
middle and then another through ball before he slotted
A cracking win and we're starting to show some of the
quality we all know we have. Week off next week but let's
hope we can keep the momentum going.....
Ryan Barker - 9. Could do nothing about their goal and
pull off some fantastic saves in both halves. Good
distribution too capped off an excellent performance.
Matty O - 10 (joint MOM). World class tackle and an even
better 50 yard through ball for the crucial second goal.
Solid defensively and always an outlet in an unfamiliar
right back position. Setting an example for the lads to
Liam - 9 (joint MOM). Crucial interceptions and tackles
earned him a number of MOM votes, as well as an excellent
ball over the top to brother Con for the first goal. Some
sloppy distribution from the back cost him the sole MOM
Peter - 7. Defying the critics at the ripe old age of 55;
positioning was excellent and calm and composed on the
ball. Marshalled the defence excellently.
Jack Barton - 8. Another solid and consistent display,
it's difficult to see brother Callum displacing him after
Renaldo - 6. Excellent through ball for our third and
mostly composed and solid in the middle of the park. At
times got caught in possession despite teammates shouting
'man on' loudly and one specific attempt to worm out
trouble on the edge of the box almost cost us.
Sean McDermott - 7. Quietly efficient in the middle of
park, winning tackles and like a metronome with his
passing. One especially pleasing moment when he completely
floored their striker with a shoulder to shoulder.
Sean Nolan - 6. After the usual three pre game nutmegs,
energy and passion in the middle of the park. Some nice
touches in tight areas. A couple of poor pull backs could
have increased our lead, notably one to Jordan and
especially one to Matty O, which was somehow turned into a
goal scoring opportunity (and somehow earned him muppet).
Steve English - 7. Took his goal well when put on plate
by Matty O. Always an outlet and looking to create
opportunities when on the ball.
Tom Martin - 4. A goal and an assist capped off a decent
first half, but marked down after being twisted inside out
on the half way line. However, Tommy smashed every header
and tackle following this incident. His pre match Friday
night routine also meant that our opinionated social sec
had to pull out of the first social at the last minute and
thus contributing to the low mark.
Conor - 9. Two goals and a constant threat with ball at
feet and when trying to get in behind. Sharpness is
returning and should win the Old I's plenty more games
Jordan - 8. In the right place at the right time to slot
away his two goals, but some wasteful finishing cost him
taking home the match ball. Intelligent runs from the
inside right position helped stretch the game.
Gaffer - 5. Poor preparation in not knowing much about the
oppo, but his attacking instincts starting to rub off on
the side. Intelligent substitutions but disappointing that
other commitments means his assistants will be picking up
the reigns for the next game
