1st X1 3 Old Southgate Olympic 1 (a) – 28/10/2017
Scorers: Alex Youngman; Matt O’Sullivan; Jason Mbakwe

MoM: Matt O’Sullivan
Muppet: Renaldo

We did not have far to travel on Saturday morning as
we had to venture to our very own North London to play
Southgate. We lined up with the oldest centre back
pairing ever known to man (not far off 100) with Pete
O’Grady playing alongside Matty O’Sullivan. Full backs
for the game were Jordan Gray and Dan Porter, a
strongish looking midfield if you take the dead wood
out with Renaldo Gracias playing alongside Tom Martin.
Alex Youngman was playing just in front to try and
find those cheeky pockets of space and up front for
the afternoon was Steve English and the Conors O’Grady
and Gaffey. On the bench for the game and ready to
replace any one who was carrying a few extra pounds
and just not fit enough or good enough for first team
football, we had Jason, Ciaran (the better, younger,
more handsome and less hairy Nolan brother) and yet
another O’Grady who was skipping University to make an
appearance on the bench, poor parenting? You decide?

In the first 20 minutes Ignatius seemed to be up for
the fight, the tempo was kept high, no Southgate
player was allowed time on the ball and the first goal
looked imminent. Our first goal came from a very quick
counter attack, which found Alex on the edge of the
box which he dispatched emphatically. The game was
then firmly in control for the next 10 minutes or so
as big Pete and Matty cleared any danger that
presented itself. Unfortunately for them one of our
leader, our ‘el capi tan’ totally lost the ability to
use his legs and decided to allow their dangerous
number 8 to freely walk into the penalty area and tap
into the net, thanks skip. After a bad end to the
first half and some positive reinforcement from Dave
at half time, the boys came out with a spring in their
step and looked to dominate the game. Alex was put
through on goal twice but decided that one goal was
more than enough for him and credit must go to the
keeper who pulled off some very good saves all
afternoon and the score line would have been much
greater if it wasn’t for their number 1. Our second
was a well delivered corner was met very well by
Matt’s shoulder as again their keeper got a hand to
but failed to keep it out, 2-1. Our 3rd goal was
slightly scrappy but Jason showed great strength and
perseverance to find his way through a group of
opposition defenders to squeeze home our 3rd, 3-1. It
was backs to the walls stuff for the last 5 minutes
but with our bus well and truly parked we were
confident of holding on to our 2 goal lead.

A very good win from the boys sees us through to the
next round, anyone of the back four could have picked
up the M.O.M. trophy but in the end it deservedly went
to Matty O’Sullivan. Muppet went again to a well-
deserved Renaldo Gracias who could have picked up the
trophy for a number of different reasons, including
losing his man for the goal but the main reason was
for his failed attempt at trying to head the ball but
instead looked like well-fed Sealion at the zoo trying
to balance a ball on his nose. I wonder if we will
ever see Liam O’Grady again, winter is coming and it
is the prime season for colds so not sure we will see
Liam until spring.
