1st XI 1 Wandsworth 2 (a) AFA Senior Cup
Scorer: Tom Martin
Man of Match: Ryan Barker
Muppet : Jordan Gray
So another epic journey to Roehampton. 10am
start and a trek across London via Tower
Bridge - taking in some of the sites along
the way - with the lads playing crap rap
stuff in the O'Grady bus
Some proper tunes followed in the changing
rooms with the boys (Dan and Tom) bopping to
YMCA and Staying Alive. The oppo must have
been terrified! Proper music with people
actually singing - of sorts anyway!
With all the lads arriving before kick off,
we got in a decent warm-up and started the
game with some energy.
Matty O, decided a jaunt around Brighton was
more fun than a trip to Roehampton so we
again had 70 year Old Peter O'G marshalling
the centre of defence alongside nephew Liam
- just back from a broken wrist. Dan and Jack
filled their usual spots at full back with
Ryan between the sticks.
We had a few early attacks with the oppo
content to try and beat our high line with
balls over the top which didn't really cause
us any problems at all.
About 15 mins in, some good build up play,
freed up Alex down the left who jigged past
his man and delivered a cracker of a cross
which was met by his midfield partner Tommy
Martin who thundered a header high off the
top of the post into the net. 1-0 and
probably well deserved.
Wandsworth had a lot of possession around the
back but their build up play was slow at this
stage. In fact the whole game seemed half
paced from both sides - all felt a bit flat
considering it was an AFA Senior Cup game.
Kane started brightly on the left with Steve
tidy on the right supporting Conor up top.
Anyhow we got to half time 1 up seeking a bit
more urgency in the 2nd half. Jordan and Jake
came on for Kane and Steve.
The urgency came for sure but not from us.
Wandsworth began to keep hold of the ball and
started to open us up more than they did in
Their equaliser came from a set piece though.
We have been good at defending corners but
after around 60 mins, a corner bobbled around
in our box to be finished from a few yards
out. Scrappy. 1-1 and probably deserved -
despite the annoying antics of the Wandsworth
manager on the sideline who kept harping on
at the referee - it was constant - (worse
than listening to the Mrs!) - the ref has a
hard enough job as it is without having to a
hear constant whingeing from the oppo
manager. See's it on the TV so reckons it's.
ok. Nah - dont think so
After the equaliser we got back in the game
with a good 10 min spell and could have
nicked a couple. A mazy run from Conor saw
him cut inside 3 or 4 players and his shot
from 25 yards crashed back off the post. 5
mins later a great interception by Ren and
first time pass set Conor through but his
shot squeezed just wide of the post.
Wandsworth again stepped up the pace playing
from the back through midfield and we found
it hard to stay with our men as the oppo
movement was good. A decent deep cross found
a free man at far post to give Wandsworth the
Steve and Kane came back on for Peter and
Jake as we pushed forward to get the
equaliser. This left us more exposed and Ryan
almost singlehandedly at times kept us in
with a chance with 3 or 4 good saves when the
oppo seemed sure to score. Ryan picked up MoM
for his efforts.
There was time left for Jordan to clearly win
the Muppet vote with a triple salko in our
box when under no pressure to put the ball
out for a corner!
We ended up with a couple of corners right at
the death but it ended 2-1.
So no complaints, Wandsworth deserved it with
their 2nd half showing. Couldnt even listen
to any more classic tunes after the game as a
good few of the lads had to shoot off
straightaway. Major beer pong tournament
awaited - I won't mention who got to the
