Let’s rewind back to 16th January 2016 the fives took on Southgate County and little did we know then that the fives would go on to a historic run which would see them play 36, lose 36 scoring 46 goals and conceding a whopping 207 goals in the process.

693 days, and somehow 2 promotions later, the fives were up against a strong Latymer side who before the game were a win away from securing second spot in the league.

Last minute changes, resulted in the side lining up with Andre “Frank the Tank” Henry in goal, Davide, Rob, Flapper & Gareth making up the back 4. Nick Clee, Darragh, JOB and Steve Daly in Midfield and Jamie & Eugene upfront with Connor on the bench (when he arrived!).

The fives started well, lots of battle, passing etc. and actually went 1-nil up after a nice finish from Eugene after about 10 minutes. Darragh & JOB were winning their individual battles in midfield, and the back four were dealing with the 2 big guys up front. The game continued with Latymer slowly coming into their own and a last man tackle by Davide kept the score at 1-0, followed by a goal line clearance from Gareth. After about 30 mins our game was halted due to an injury in the 3rds game. Luckily one of our oppo players was a medic and we allowed him to leave the game to go and perform some treatment and we let one of the players from the other game join our game keeping the sides equal.

Just before the break the oppo whipped in a cross that Captain Lee unfortunately bundled into his own net, making it 1-1. Moments later Frank the tank and the oppo forward had a coming together in the box, Andre strongly held onto the ball after the 2 big men collided. Dusting himself off Andre got up and carried on.

At half time, we were positive and had the belief that we could still get something from the game, and the positive energy continued. Connor replaced Jamie upfront and around 15 minutes later produced the goal that put us into the lead.   A number of blocks, tackles from the defence kept us in the game , along with a further 2 clearances from Gareth on the line. Darragh hit the crossbar after a shot from distance, but we still waited that important 3rd goal just to give us a little buffer.

A JOB corner was met by Connor and one of their defenders and the ball popped out to the captain who volleyed the ball into the net! 3-1 up we had our little buffer we needed that allowed us to play a little bit calmer.

The game continued with chances for both sides, Eugene went off injured and was replaced by Jamie, who within minutes hit the post and had another cleared off the line. The oppo did not give up and with about 10 to go hit a shot from outside the area which went into the bottom corner… 3-2 to the I’s.

The outrushing Tank was beaten by the forward, who knocked it forward, luckily Lee was their to “calmly” back heel the ball on the edge of the 6 yard box to Davide who cleared. As Latymer pushed for the game, it left a bit of space at the back and JOB hit the crossbar from just within the oppo half.

Injury time was here for what seemed like an eternity, but the team stood strong, won the challenges their individual battles, the met with an almighty roar the full time whistle was blown and the fives ended their long overdue winless streak. Is this the start of a winning run only time will tell.
