Old I’s 0 – 2 Queen Marys

Man of the Match: Conor O’G and Dan Porter

Muppet of the Match: Jordan Gray

Our final game of 2017 saw us up against
Queen Mary. Our pitch was waterlogged as a
result of the snow last weekend so the game
was moved to Queen Mary’s ground in East
London. Rumour has it that nothing was wrong
with our pitch and the gaffer just fancied
the much shorter trip to the opponents

Alex Youngman, who has been a standout
performer for us this year, was absent this
week, although we had Jack Barton return from
the previous week. We were also joined on
the side-lines by the injured duo of Eoin
O’G, who had just returned from his first
term at uni, and Eoin Culligan who heard
about the snow last week and thought he
couldn’t miss out on a ski-session down the
east-end alps.

We started with Ryan Barker in goal, and a
back four of Dan, Peter O’G, Matty O and Sean
McD. The five in midfield consisted of
Tommy, Liam O’G, Renaldo, Kane and Conor O’G,
with Jake up top.

We started the game well and took control of
the ball from the start. There was a good
buzz and energy about the team in the first
20 minutes. Some good play on the right hand
side between Dan Porter and Conor O’G led to
Conor O’G unleashing a volley towards the
goal which clipped the outside of the post
and nestled into the wrong side of the net.
Fine for Conor O’G!

Shortly after Jake had a header flash wide of
the goal. The opponents did not have any
notable chances in the first half and we came
in at half time at 0-0, having dominated
possession but unable to find that little bit
of quality in the final third to take the

The team-talk at half time was to stay
switched on and continue playing the way we
are in the knowledge that the goals will
come…they didn’t! While again we knocked the
ball around well, we failed to create any
clear cut chances in the second half.
Jordan and Jack came on for Kane and Sean McD
midway into the second half. Shortly after
coming on, Jordan had a pop shot from the
edge of the box which had the majority of the
team dumbfounded after the ball ended up
miles away from the goal and closer to Eoin
O’G on the side-lines. This, together with
his cruyff turn straight off the pitch, later
saw him pick up muppet.

Against the run of the game, Queen Mary took
the lead after some neat work on the right
saw their midfielder clip a ball to the back
post for their on-running left midfielder to
sneak between Dan Porter and Ryan and head
into the back of the net.

To be fair to the lads, we didn’t let our
heads drop and continued to look for an
equaliser. Jack Barton had a shot well saved
and Matty O went close from a header from a
corner, but in all honesty for all of our
possession we perhaps should have done a lot
more with it.

With about ten minutes to go, a long hoof up
the pitch from their keeper wasn’t dealt with
by Matty O and their striker ran on to the
loose ball and instinctively lobbed Ryan who
was unfortunately caught in ‘no mans land’
after being encouraged all game to come off
his line…sod’s law!

We huffed and puffed for the remainder of the
game but failed to find a goal. The game
ended 2-0 and it was fair to say that the
better team had lost on the day. We can’t
however start to feel sorry for ourselves and
should work even harder to make sure we
improve our league form in the new year.
Man of the match was shared between Conor O’G
and Dan Porter, who played his final game for
us this season (and the foreseeable future)
as he is off to Australia after being barred
from all of the bars in London.

Despite the defeat, it was great to see many
of the first team attend the Christmas party
in the evening, which ended in Conor O’G and
Joe O’G picking up the beer pong crown.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
