Ignatians 1 Parkonians 2 (a)
27th Jan 2018
Man of Match: Steve English
Muppet: Tom Martin

Middlesex & Essex Cup – Quarter Final

The team made the journey to Fairlop eager to
get back into the swing of things after the
same fixture being called off the previous
week. The gaffer had a surprising cry-off
very late from the youngest Barton, Jack, who
we understand was on the back of a 3 day
bender and couldn’t face all the running up &
down the left wing! Callum Barton to the
rescue? – Gaffer says NO…. not this week
anyway… A quick tactical change meant the
versatile Sean McDubs slipped back to the
left back position alongside Matty O and
Peter O’G centre back and Liam O’G in defence
with Ryan between the sticks.

The midfield was made up of Conor on the
right, Steve, Tom & Ren in the middle with
Alex on the left side. Upfront running
around, confusing the defence, dragging them
all over the place making devious little runs
shou7ld be a fit, strong striker... We
haven’t got anything like that so we leave
Jake up there to impersonate a burly striker
(at least he looks like one).

The game started with Ignatians looking a tad
cautious, with Parkonians having a lot of
possession in the first 20mins, they played
the ball around nicely but didn’t really have
any meaningful attacks. As we started to get
a bit more involved, we pressed really well
as a team and people were tracking their men
nicely even though in some cases being
dragged to the other side of the pitch, the
press was working and we were managing to
nick the ball in good positions and getting
through balls up to either Jake or Conor but
Parks in most cases done well to recover. We
ended up getting our goal from breaking down
a Parkonians attack and playing quick passes
up the field, with Jake holding up the ball
long enough and laying it off for Conor to
run on to and finish with an impressive first
time hit, not bad for his weak foot… 1-0 up!

For the remainder of the first half,
Ignatians kept the ball well and were working
hard to get the ball back from the SAL
Premier side. As always our midfield were
working hard (even Ren this week) but none
work harder than Tom Martin, who was giving
the Park’s midfield no time at all,
unfortunately a clumsy tackle saw him receive
a yellow just before half time.

The gaffer gave us a positive speech at half
time, and pushed us to keep working as hard
as we had been in the first half. Whoever
keeps switching up the sweets, sort your life
out and get back to wine gums. Cheers.

Second half saw our opposition playing the
ball longer, but we seemed to be coping well
enough. A tangle in the midfield ended up
with Tommy reacting to a tackle that the ref
disapproved of, actually most people
disapproved of and ultimately led to a 2nd
yellow and I’s down to 10 men. Even though
we had the disadvantage, we were still
playing great football and keeping the ball
very well. Steve English had a great game in
the middle, which eventually won him man of
the match… Need to see this Steve every

We had so many chances going forward with
Conor and Jake both coming close a couple of
times each. We need to learn to make the
most of these opportunities. A big positive
from the second half was our work rate, and
the way we kept trying to play good football,
we created some really good chances with 10
men against one of the top teams in the SAL
Premier division.

Inevitably the pressure was piled on by Parks
in the 2nd half and our finest efforts to
keep the game in our favour were not enough,
Parks had a lot of possession in our half
which led to a player free in the middle who
had the time to put the ball past Ryan.

More of the same with their 2nd goal, I think
it was their striker who ended up with the
ball and stuck a powerful shot to put them 2-
1 up and take them through to another semi
final this season.

Muppet went to Tom for the double yellow and
as mentioned Steve got man for a great
performance in midfield. Onto next week
against Beals followed by a night out with
plenty of people catching up on their MOM

Good luck to Parkonians in the Semi’s
