Old Ignatians 4 – Economicals 3

Scorers: Jake Watson 3, Conor O'Grady

Man of Match: Jake Watson
Muppet: Ryan Barker

The boys made the long journey away to Economicals
this week, in what was a huge game as both sides look
to survive the relegation battle!

After a sluggish warm up, we lined up with Ryan in
goal, Gaffey, Liam, Eoin Culligan and Callum Barton
across the back four. Steve and Sean McDubbs sitting
in front of the defence, with Alex, Renaldo and Conor
O'G in a three behind Jake up top! Kane and Eoin O'G
made up the subs bench with Eoin coming back from uni
for the weekend.

The boys seemed in high spirits before the game off
the back of a few league wins, and looked to get off
to a fast start – however, the opposite happened. Poor
decision making and silly challenges all round, with
Liam O'G not looking at it after his 27 pints the
night before led to Economicals going 2-0 up within 15
minutes, and things didn't look like they were going
to get any better.

A Cryuff turn on the halfway line from Conor O'G took
3 players out the game, and his through ball was
finished emphatically by Jake Watson to bring us back
into the game.

The boys suddenly looked to have found a new lease of
life, and began to dominate the midfield area. Ren was
his usual commanding self and was finding neat little
passes in and around the midfield, Steve and Sean
McDubbs were working well together, with the latter's
fitness improving considerably over the course of the

All the pressure led to an Old IG's corner, which
Conor O'G whipped in to the front post and caught the
oppo off guard, with one of their defenders getting a
‘slight’ deflection into his own goal. 2-2 and the
momentum was well and truly with us.

Not long after, Steven was fouled in our own half, and
from the resulting free kick, Conor O'G sent an
audacious ball in behind their defence, which Jake
took down like a butterfly with sore feet, and smashed
into the far hard corner with his weak foot, great
finish and we'd managed to reverse the game completely
before half time!

The half time team talk asked for us to continue the
way we finished the first half, and we certainly did
that. Eoin O'G came on for the injured Eoin Culligan
with Ren dropping into CB, and Kane came on for Alex
on the left wing. Not long into the second half, some
great pressing from Sean McDubbs saw him rob their CB
of the ball, lay it off to Kane whose first time ball
found Jake in the right hand side of the box. After
one bounce, Jake unleashed a thunderous volley into
the top right corner and took the keeper completely by
surprise. Another great goal and a hat-trick for
Jake... 4-2 and jug time!

A great bit of football down the right ended with
Conor O'G pulling the ball back to brother Eoin, with
what seemingly looked like an open goal. Instead of
just kicking it in, he decided to try to chip the
keeper and got too much on it, with the ball coming
back off the bar. Could have been a nice final 10 mins
or so if we'd gone 5-2 up.

However, we continued in the same manner, and felt
comfortable enough to see the game out. That was until
Ryan had seen enough and decided to try and dribble
round their striker, got caught and let the oppo back
into the game after a close range finish. 4-3.

We managed to see the game out for what was a vital 3
points! Great character from the team to turn the game
around, and also things to work on ahead of next
week's game at home against the same opposition!

Man of the match went to Jake for the hat-trick, and
Muppet went to Ryan for his attempted dribble.

Another big 3 points needed next week!
