=Old Ignatians 1st XI 2 – Southgate 1 (h)
10th March 2018

Scorers: Alex Youngman and Conor O’Grady

Man of the Match: Matty O’ Sullivan
Muppet: Kane Morrissey

We went in to this week full of confidence
and raring to go after our postponement the
previous week. However, Southgate are not top
of the league for no reason and so everyone
was aware it wouldn’t be an easy afternoon.
With Gaffey injured on the sidelines and Pete
away at a funeral (some said it was his
own!), we welcomed back Kane in to the squad
having missed the last game.

The pre match antics were slightly different
this week with Man United vs Liverpool being
screened on the clubhouse tele. It largely
consisted of Gaffey (United) buzzing on the
WhatsApp chat from the comfort of his own
home while Ryan tore his hair out in the
clubhouse watching an underwhelming
performance from his beloved scousers.

Meanwhile, Matty showed his age in trying to
understand the worlds of Tinder and Bumble…
but we’ll leave that there!

On to the game itself and we made a great
start. First and second to everything in the
first 10 minutes, the back five looked solid
and we kept the ball pretty well. A start
that set the tone for the rest of the half.
The only negative was Con’s first few
corners. He must have been watching Eriksen
lately because they all failed to beat the
first man. On one occasion, he managed to
boot the floor and then decided to lay on the
ground and cuddle the corner flag for a good
minute while play carried on! A strong muppet
contender early doors.

Soon after, our pressure told and we made the
breakthrough. A quick thinking throw in by
our burly number 9 released Con on the right
who managed to pick out Alex running in from
the left. Alex controlled well, Cruyff turned
and provided a great finish. 1 0. Ryan then
made a great save from an overhead kick which
turned out to be his only real save of the
entire game. Approaching half time and we
were still pushing for another goal. Liam put
a good ball back in to the danger area
following our corner and as their defence
stopped and appealed for offside against
Alex, the ball fell at the feet of Conor.
With the keeper leaving an inviting gap to
his left, Con coolly obliged and slotted the
ball home. Never in doubt and 2 0.

The half time team talk was a positive one.
We were well on top against top of the league
but knew they would come at us in the second
half. Especially as they were losing their
heads with the ref and a couple of our
players. You can probably guess who!

The second half was fairly scrappy and
although we didn’t always play our best
football, we created a few half chances and
were very unfortunate not to get a penalty or
two as Jake was completely wiped out. But we
felt we were still in control of the football
match. A dirty couple of minutes from the
oppo saw bad challenges on Callum and then
Tommy, the latter of which resulted in Tom
hobbling off to be replaced by Kane and
tempers were starting to boil over.

As comfortable as we were, Kane thought he
would save Dave yet another clean sheet jug
and ruin Ryan’s day. Despite the loudest
scream you could ask for from Matt to stand
up and not dive in, Kane wanted to impact the
game from the bench as Dave had asked and so
ignored Matt’s plea. Instead, he went flying
towards their attacker in the box like a
steam train and it was obvious a whole three
seconds before impact that Kane was going to
rugby tackle him. He claimed his foot got
stuck in the ground but either way, it was a
stonewall pen. Sadly for Ryan, he went down
in instalments and was not able to save the
pen, the third he has conceded in three
weeks…his fines are beginning to tot up!

A downer on his afternoon having swept
behind the back four and kicked so well. With
a few minutes to go, their striker was put
through on goal only for the referee to call
offside – probably a fortunate decision for
us but we’ll take it having been denied our

We held on fairly comfortably for the final
few minutes to earn a thoroughly deserved 2 1
victory. We remain unbeaten in the league in
2018 and are up to 5th with confidence sky
high, knowing we beat anyone on our day. It’s
a shame we weren’t getting these results
before Jakey and Callum returned from their
travels or we would be right up there for

All 12 players involved played well but Kane
had to receive Muppet of the Day for giving
away the pen and costing us the warranted
clean sheet. Cheers Kane. Callum and Matty
both received four Man of the Match votes
each for solid games at the back and so did a
joint whack off with Kane (and Con who owed
one). However, Alex’s vote then came through
via a text to Dave. He went for Matty and so
he won Man of the Match outright. Jordi Calba
had to settle for the free pint. Cheers.

We go again next week at our mighty fortress
that is Loyola, seeking yet another three
points before we go and get trollied on the
Guinness for Paddy’s night!! COYI!!
