Old Ignatians 1st XI 0 -1 Fulham Compton

Man: Renaldo      Muppet: Liam OG

The 1sts fine 2018 unbeaten run came to end
on Saturday as they went down 1-0 to a
resilient Fulham Compton side.

A frustrating day began with a long trek to
Richmond and only realising upon arrival at a
school building without a patch of grass
insight that we'd been given the wrong
address, with the actual pitch a further 20
minutes away. Good start!

We kicked off on time, after a hurried warm
up, with a starting line up of Ryan in goal,
back four: Liam, Matt, Pete and Callum,
midfield trio of: Steve, Sean and Ren
supporting a front three of: Jake, Conor and
Alex. Sean Nolan and Jack ready and waiting
on the bench.

A sluggish performance all first half ensued,
with Fulham winning most of the 50:50 battles
- the only times we did win the ball back the
ref duly blew for soft fouls against. What
turned out to be the only goal of the game
came after 20 minutes - a well worked move
down the right leading to a free header for
the unmarked striker: shouts of offside were
ignored! A single shot from Ren after a nice
passing combo was all we had to show by half
time for our efforts.

The second half began in complete contrast to
the first, with everybody (including subs
made at half time Sean and Jack) seeming
sharper and more willing to press the oppo.
This led to most of the second 45 being
played in Fulhams half, only the occasional
counter attack troubling us. The pressing
didn't break down their defence enough
though, with only a shot from Alex, free kick
from Conor and few goal mouth scrambles at
corners coming close. Jake also had a goal he
cleverly tapped in ruled out for offside.

Ultimately, their defence was just better
than our attack that afternoon. We pick
ourselves up and go again for the final week
of the season with a double header against
Wandsworth: 6 points available!
