Old Ignatians 5ths 1 – 5 Leyton County
The original team was DVD in goal, with Rob Johnson, the Hitman, Flapper and Two Botts in the back. PJ, Tubsy, Daniele and Dave in the middle with Jamie and John-Joe up-top.
The game started late when the ref turned up late, which meant both negative and positive points. The negative being we ate all the jelly babies, the positive being Simeon getting there before the start and Tony Brady making the bench both players turned up not being expected at all. With that Jurgen went in goal which freed DVD to go up-top with Jamie starting on the bench.
Recent games against Leyton have all had the same pattern – Leyton’s “older” players using their experience and the younger players using their speed. We knew that but didn’t learn from it.
From the off the 5s piled on the pressure but however as usual mistakes cost us. The oppo’s midfield took the ball with no-one closing him, he took a 25 yard shot and it was swerving away from Jurgen.
The second goal was from a suspect free kick. Again Jurgen couldn’t do anything about it as the ball was basically planted in the top corner of the goal.
The third goal was a bit of a gift as Two-Botts decided to shin the ball into the goal, which is ironic because he plays most of his football with his shins.
The half time score was 3-0, DVD wasn’t happy with the score as the way the goals or the way they came about were petty.
The second half started with Daniele coming off for Tony Brady.
The 5s finally got a goal with good link-up play from Tubzy on the right cut the ball into the box and Dave Golley scored first time into the bottom corner.
The forth goal came about from a free kick which again was suspect, same result top corner.
The fifth goal was beautiful but it came from one of our own players, Flapper slid on the ground and headed the ball into the net.
DVD pushed Flapper to midfield and had three in the back and it worked very well having a 5 foot 3 centre half.
The game finished 5-1.
